WHY WORRY?

Philippians 4:6-7 says, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

The greatest source of human trouble is worry. We often find ourselves weighed down by anxiety. Our minds race over countless issues: our appearance, the process of ageing, what we will eat, and most especially, what others think or say about us. Yet, it is essential to remember that what truly matters is not the opinion of people but the opinion of God. We are not defined by what others say about us; rather, we are defined by what God says we are. No matter our past errors or mistakes, we are assured of our identity as the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, and we are deeply loved by Him. This understanding should lead us to question why we worry.

We are instructed not to worry because worry does not come from God. It is, in fact, an adversary we unleash upon ourselves—self-inflicted torment upon our spirit, soul, and body. Worry identifies problems but offers no solutions; it adds nothing positive or meaningful to our lives. Instead, it is evidence of a lack of trust in God and a sign of unbelief. While it may seem natural or even expected for humans to worry, the reality is that it is not helpful.

The best way to counteract worry and anxiety is to cast our burdens upon God, trusting in His willingness and power to bring peace to our spirits. He has promised to carry us in His strength and to empower our spirit by His Spirit. This divine assurance gives us the freedom to stop worrying, recognising that it is wholly unprofitable.

Ultimately, the choice is ours. Instead of worrying, we can turn to worship, freeing our spirits and protecting our joy. Nothing should rob us of our joy, for joy itself is our conquering power.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unfailing love and constant presence in my life. Today, I lay down my worries, anxieties, and fears at Your feet, trusting in Your promise of peace that surpasses all understanding, in Jesus’ name! Amen!
