John 15:14 says, “You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.”
While many individuals strive to serve Jesus through acts of worship and ministry, true friendship with Him involves more than diligent service. Working for Jesus is meaningful, but friendship is marked by deeper intimacy—by sharing in His understanding and embracing His perspective. As John 15:14 declares, “You are my friends if you do whatever I command you.” Friendship with Jesus goes beyond outward actions and centres on a personal relationship that shapes the spiritual atmosphere of our lives.
Bearing a Christian name, attending church, or listening to sermons does not by itself make someone a friend of Jesus. Genuine friendship is demonstrated by listening to His word and living in obedience to His teachings. As Jesus affirms in John 15:14, obedience is the mark of true friendship. When we obey, we come to know His thoughts—both about ourselves and about others. Through obedience, we align our hearts with His, gaining insight into His will and receiving His Spirit. God’s Word is available to all, but His Spirit is reserved for those whose lives reflect obedience.
The Bible offers powerful examples of friendship with God. Abraham stands out as a model of obedience: “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, and he was called God’s friend” (James 2:23). To become more like Christ, we must renew our minds with God’s Word and submit to its authority. Friendship with Jesus does not mean we will not face challenges or opposition; in fact, anything close to Jesus may encounter adversity. Yet, He promises to help us overcome and remain steadfast.
A life of obedience and friendship with Jesus is supported by prayer and trust in His promises. Being His friend does not exempt us from persecution, but it assures us of His presence and grace. As we continue to follow His commandments and make Jesus our Lord and Saviour, He blesses, heals, and delivers us. Ultimately, friendship with Jesus assures us of eternal companionship with Him.
May you be encouraged to seek not only to serve Jesus but also to pursue true friendship with Him – friendship founded on obedience, faith, and prayer. Let His words and example guide you, and rest in the assurance that He will never leave you nor forsake you.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, give me the grace to keep Your commandments and do Your will alone. Amen!
