Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

This verse highlights God’s sovereignty and universal authority. The essence of stillness is ceasing human striving in order to recognize God’s control and supremacy, trusting that He alone will be exalted over all the earth.

The Essence of Stillness

Proof Text: Psalms 46:10 “He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Many times we find it very hard to stay still in the presence of God. We always want to be busy doing something. We are always in a hurry and lack stillness.

When God took the Israelites into the wilderness, He had a purpose for them: to bring them to obedience. Bringing them to obedience meant causing them to hunger, and then feeding them.

God took this direction so that He may be revealed to them, since revelation builds faith. When God was taking them into the wilderness, He did not explain why; He just led them there. He tested them but that test was not meant for their destruction; it was meant for their growth. Once God became certain of their obedience, however, He led them out of the wilderness.

People of God, the main purpose of the wilderness is to draw us close to God. The closer we get to God, the more obedience is required. Obedience to God requires that we deny ourselves the desires and pleasures of the flesh.

People of God, God doesn’t need to prove Himself. He raises you only when He is assured of your obedience, because only in obedience is God exalted, not the self. This is why God is building character in us now so that when we get to our place of destiny, we will not crash, explode and lose it all.

The wilderness can be seen as a place of stillness – the place where we only move because we are asked to, not because we want to; the place where we depend solely on God’s Word, not on our intellect; the place where our gaze is moulded to remain eternally on Him. The gift of the tiger is not in the city but in the wilderness.

Christians, be still. The place of stillness is where we get to know Him and see Him. Stay there until you get God’s Word. We cannot build on fantasies and dreams, but only on God’s Word.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to be still. Give me the grace to stay with You until nothing else matters, in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.
